Visiting citizen panel about sustainable innovation in CASI project

The PE2020 project compounded a catalogue of 38 innovative public engagement cases in the report “Public Engagement Innovations – Catalogue of public engagement (PE) initiatives”. One of the initiatives was CIVISTI, which aimed to produce a list of new and emerging issues for European science and technology. In addition, the project’s objective was to produce a set of policy options of relevance to future European framework programmes, and base these products upon a novel and cost effective process of citizen participation supported by experts and stakeholders.

The CIVISTI method has been further implemented in an applied and downscaled format in the EU funded project CASI (Public Participation in Developing a Framework for Assessment and Management of Sustainable Innovation), which is a sister project of the PE2020. In this project, the method is used to provide research priorities and policy recommendations for the specific area of sustainable innovation.

Future Earth Townhall Meeting

Participatory workshop to map out key priorities in global change research
26 May 2015, Eurooppasali (Malminkatu 16, Helsinki), 8:30-13:00

Challenge

Achieving sustainability in a world subject to global change requires understanding the links among environmental and societal change. Challenges related to resilience, governance models, resource efficiency, technology, business, trade, equity, and poverty are interlinked: a change in one component will cascade to many others.

Creating solutions that will lead to sustainability requires establishing a new interaction and partnership culture between researchers and society. Solutions-oriented global change research requires joint framing and co-design of research between producers and end-users of scientific knowledge. PE2020-Consortium meeting in Aarhus, Denmark, January the 28th-30th, 2015

The PE2020-consortium was happy to meet each other for a consortium meeting in the land of thousand wind mills, Denmark. The University of Aarhus hospitably took us under its wings and offered us a peaceful and beautiful place for a couple of day’s intensive work. All consortium partners were present and we even could enjoy the company of two of our SAB-members and with third replaced by a colleague. So, all was set for a successful and productive meeting – which it also turned out to be.

Sharing Ideas beyond the European Union

The 4th International conference “Science in Society” was held in Vancouver, Canada. According to the organisers science has traditionally been characterized by empiricism, objectivity, and a productive autonomy from the social world. While these remain important elements of modern scientific methods and practice, science’s ability to remain independent of human agendas and values is increasingly being challenged.
