The project will deliver science-based policy relevant deeper understanding to be used by science policy practitioners and other actors who need to promote public engagement in science, technology and innovation. It is important that the Voice of the Customer is heard and that there will respectively be a system for controlling the output. In addition, it is important that the project reaches its key audiences. One way in which the two-way communication is the incorporation of a scientific and science policy advisory board in the project structure. The advisory board have as its members internationally experienced and renowned senior experts in research as well as in science policy matters.
Its tasks consist in:
- Assessing the scientific quality and especially practical relevance of the work
- Advising the Steering Committee and the Coordinator on issues relating to the progression of the research activities
- Advice and support in terms of external communications and dissemination
- If needed, in discussing strategies and contingency plans in case of obstacles or delays to the envisioned implementation of the project
The Advisory board will have as its members the following experts:
Martin Hynes, BE, MBA, C.Eng., F.I.E.I., was appointed Chief Executive of the European ScienceFoundation in 2011. Prior to this, he was Director of The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) and in this role he implemented a number of innovative funding schemes with a special focus on early career researchers. Hynes was formerly Senior Science Advisor with the Science Foundation Ireland and a Senior POlicy Analyst with Forfas, the national policy and advisory board for enterprise, trade, science, technology and innovation. With specialist training in Governance, Martin has served on a number of Boards including that of the Irish University Quality Board and the Digital Enterprise Research Institute as well as those of private companies. An Engineering and MBA Graduate, he has considerable commercial experience having mentored private sector start-ups during a three year period. He also worked for several years in product line management with Westinghouse Electric.
Markku Mattila, DScTech, Professor, is Research Director at University of Helsinki, Network for Higher Education and Innovation Research-HEGOM from 2012. Dr Markku Mattila was appointed President of the Academy of Finland on 1 March 2007 until 1 March 2012. From 2000 to 2007 he served as the Director of the University Division at the Ministry of Education. At Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Dr Mattila worked as Professor of Safety Engineering from 1982 to 2000 and during that period he served also as Chair of the Institute, as Dean of the Department, as ViceRector and as acting Rector of the University. He was a member of the National Research and Innovation Council chaired by Prime Minister from 2007 to 2012.Professor Mattila was a member of the High Level Group of the Joint Programming Initiative of the EU in 2008-2012 and member of the Governing Council of the European Science Foundation from 2007 to 2012 and Vice President from 2009 to 2012.
Eleonore Pauwels is a Public Policy Scholar at the (U.S.) Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, affiliated with the Center’s Science and Technology Innovation Program. In 2006-2007, she was part of the Governance & Ethics Unit of the Directorate-General for Research at the European Commission. Pauwels has conducted research funded by the U.S. National Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. She has written several articles and book chapters on the potential for new collaborations between synthetic biology and “social sciences,” one of which was awarded “Best Paper” by the European Commission. Pauwels holds a M.A. in European Public Policy and Politics awarded by L’lnstitut d’etudes politiques de Paris (IEP) and Bath University within the European American University Consortium.
Simon Burall is the Director of Involve. He has long and extensive experience the fields of
democratic reform, governance, public participation, stakeholder engagement, and accountability and transparency. He has worked at the national level in Africa, Asia and Europe as well as on related issues of global governance and democracy. In addition to his role with Involve, Simon is also the Chair of Democratic Audit, an Ambassador for WWF UK and Head of Dialogue at the ScienceWise Expert Resource Centre. Before moving to Involve Simon was a Research Fellow at 001 from 2006 – 2009. His interests included stakeholder engagement in the reform of the international aid delivery system and how to make development finance more effective. Prior to this he was the Executive Director of the One World Trust from 1999 – 2005 where he initiated and oversaw the development of the influential Global Accountability Index. Before joining the Trust, Simon re-established the UK volunteer network for AFS, an organisation based in Leeds coordinating intercultural exchange visits. Simon has taught both science and English in Namibia and Zimbabwe and was an election monitor in Bosnia Herzegovina in 1997.
Edward Andersson is European Associate for Involve and an expert on methods of participatory decision making. He played a part in setting up Participationcompass.org – one of Europe’s leading public engagement sites, and has advised a number of organisations on public engagement strategies, including the Home Office, the European Commission, the OECD, WHO Europe, UNDP Turkey and numerous Local Authorities and Health Trusts. He is a Professional Facilitator (Certified by the International Association of Facilitators) and is a board member of the international not-for profit e-Democracy.org. He previously worked as Dialogue Manager for Sciencewise, the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills’ Expert Resource Centre for Public Dialogue in Science and Innovation as well as working on the EU FP7 project Engage2020.
Suzanne de Cheveigné is senior researcher (directrice de recherche) with the Centre National de Ia Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and director of Centre Norbert Elias in Marseilles, France. She carries out research on publie problems in the areas of science, technology and the environment, with particular attention to the role of media and to the place of women in science. She is a member of the Editorial Board of Science Communication and Enquete and a member of the Scientific Committee of the PCST (Public Communication of Science and Technology) International Network. She is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow with the London School of Economics. She is author of L’Environnement dans le journai televise – Mediateurs et visions du monde and first author of Les Biotechnologies en debat – Pour une democratie scientifique.
